International Recommendations

The Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) was formed in 2002 by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) in order to reduce mortality and morbidity from sepsis and septic shock worldwide. It includes a steering committee and a research committee of international experts appointed by the SCCM and the ESICM.

The first recommendations for clinicians were published by the SSC in 2004 to provide guidance for the treatment of patients with sepsis or septic shock. Since then, these recommendations have been regularly updated; the last update was in 2021.

In 2020, pediatric recommendations were also published, as well as recommendations for COVID-19 (the last update for these is 2021).
